Ubi Caritas
Zachary Wadsworth, Composer
May 21, 2017 Evensong
Rogation Sunday (Easter VI) @ 4:00
“This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”
“Those words from Leonard Bernstein were ringing in my ears last June after the Pulse shootings. After about 10 days of wondering what to do, I contacted Zachary Wadsworth, to see if he would consider composing a memorial work for use by the Emmanuel Episcopal Church choir. Zach is one of the brighter lights of today’s music scene, having recently premiered a large work called Spire and Shadow for chorus, soloists and orchestra, which was commissioned by Trinity, Wall Street, in celebration of the history of St. Paul’s Chapel in downtown New York City. We became friends in Ithaca some years ago. To my astonishment, he agreed. We will be privileged to present the first performance of his setting for choir and organ of Ubi caritas at Evensong on Rogation Sunday (Easter VI), May 21 at 4pm. I received the score about ten days ago, and find it beautiful in every regard: finely crafted, ravishing to listen to, and wonderfully hopeful. Bernstein would approve.” Jack V. Austin, Organist and Choir Director
